Tips & Tricks

So what is a BLOG anyway?

Blogging is an easy way to...
DISCUSS
SHARE
COLLABORATE
...your thoughts and ideas with others.

Here are some examples of how the internet defines 'a blog'?
"A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically  that can be viewed in an HTML browser." source
"A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is called 'blogging' and the person who keeps a blog is a 'blogger.'" source
"Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Posting on a blog are almost always arranged in chronological order with the most recent additions featured prominently." source

So...I'm ready to start blogging...Where do I start?

Choose a Topic

My advice when deciding to create a blog is to focus on a topic that interests you. Your blog and the information you post should reflect what YOU are all about. You may focus on writing about a particular skill, hobby, ability, pastime  sport, video game, music, or activity - that you have knowledge about...the possibilities are limitless.

Here are a few steps to consider when choosing a topic:
  1. Identify your interests. You need to be prepared to write about your chosen topic. Unless you are passionate about your topic your blog will appear dry, and uninformed to an interested reader. No one wants to read something that the author doesn't really believe in.
  2. Consider your audience. Who might read your blog? Focus on elements of your interest that may be important to any reading your blog. For example: a blog on repairing bicycles might discuss how to remove and re install brakes correctly.
  3. Stay current. Nothing is worse then a blog writing about old news. Especially, when writing about pop culture - New songs, new movies, famous actors and actresses are interesting, and engaging - a review of 'Night at the Roxbury' released in 1998 is not...
Now you are ready...
  1. Set up an account @ Blogger.com (you will need a gmail account)
  2. Publish your first post, or...
  3. Explore the features of blogger and customize your blog! Exploring the features will help you establish some confidence in determining what it is you are trying to accomplish, during this time you may even generate some ideas for your own blog!

IF YOU READ NONE OF THE ABOVE, READ THIS.
  1. You are not alone on the internet. Everything you post here, or else where leaves a digital footprint which can be traced back to you. Employers of the 21st century, believe it or not, use google to find out about job candidates.
  2. Your intent is not to bully, ridicule, chastise, or discriminate individuals within the community or outside of it.
  3. I will be reading your posts, so keep it classy.
MOST IMPORTANT
  1. Express your creativity. Appeal to a particular audience in a way that keeps them interested.
  2. Follow AICT15F. Stay up to date with project guidelines  and topics of interest to help you create your blog.
